Choosing between bars and coins
Bullion bars are produced by mints and refiners in a range of weights. Minted bars are cut and stamped to precise dimensions, usually with a polished finish; cast bars are poured into moulds and have a more rustic appearance. For the same metal weight, bars generally carry a lower premium over spot than coins.
Bullion coins and rounds are struck with a design on both faces. Coins are issued by sovereign mints and carry a face value as legal tender; rounds look similar but are not legal tender. Their recognisable designs and smaller sizes can make them convenient to hold and to sell in part.
Whatever the form, the key facts are the metal, the weight (usually in troy ounces; one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams), the purity, and the mint or refiner that produced it. Each HLBullion product page lists these where available.
