Gold bars vs gold coins: what’s the difference?
Updated · General information, not financial advice
Gold bars
Gold bars are produced by mints and refiners in a wide range of weights, from a single gram to a kilogram and beyond. There are two main types.
- Minted bars are cut from rolled gold and struck to precise dimensions, usually with a polished finish. Many are sealed in tamper-evident packaging with a serial number.
- Cast bars are made by pouring molten gold into a mould. They have a more rustic finish and are typically produced in larger sizes.
Because a bar is a simpler product to manufacture, the premium over the metal’s spot value is generally lower than for a coin, and tends to fall further, per ounce, as bar size increases.
Gold coins
Gold bullion coins are struck by sovereign (government) mints and carry a face value as legal tender. Their face value is nominal; they trade on their gold content.
Coins are most common in one-ounce and fractional sizes. Their detailed designs, recognisable brands and standard specifications make them familiar to dealers, and smaller sizes allow part of a holding to be sold at a time.
Rounds look similar to coins but are not legal tender. They are produced by private mints and valued the same way: by metal content.

Things to consider
Neither form is “better” in general. It depends on how much you intend to hold, how you might want to sell in future, and how you will store it. Consider:
- The total amount you are buying. Premiums matter more on larger purchases.
- Whether you may want to sell part of your holding at a time.
- Storage. Larger bars are compact for their value; many small items take more space and handling.
- Keeping original packaging and documentation, which helps when you come to sell.
