Self-managed super funds
Physical precious metals in your SMSF

Why trustees consider physical metals
For many Australians, precious metals represent more than an investment. Physical gold and silver are tangible assets, recognised globally: wealth you can see, hold and securely store.
Bullion prices can fall as well as rise, and bullion does not pay income. Whether it suits a particular fund is a matter for its trustees and their advisers.
Buying for an SMSF
- 01
Tell us the purchase is for an SMSF
Contact HLBullion or choose products online, noting that the buyer is a self-managed super fund.
- 02
Verify the fund
Provide a certified copy of the fund’s trust deed and any amendments, together with identification for the individuals involved.
- 03
Accept your quote and pay from the fund
Payment should come from the fund’s own bank account. Payments from other parties require additional verification and may be declined.
- 04
Delivery or storage
Choose insured delivery, or have HLBullion arrange storage with an independent vault provider under the provider’s own agreement.
What trustees should consider
- Whether a purchase is consistent with the fund’s documented investment strategy.
- That the bullion is owned by the fund and kept separate from members’ personal assets.
- That members do not use or benefit from the bullion personally before retirement.
- Where the bullion will be stored and how that is documented.
- Records and valuation for the fund’s annual financial statements and audit.

SMSF questions
Can I buy bullion through my self-managed super fund (SMSF)?
Yes. HLBullion supplies precious metals to SMSF trustees. Purchases by an SMSF require the fund’s identification documents, such as a certified trust deed, as part of standard AML/CTF due diligence. HLBullion does not provide financial advice, so trustees should confirm any purchase suits their fund’s investment strategy.
What documents does an SMSF need to provide?
HLBullion’s due diligence for trusts and SMSFs includes a certified copy of the trust deed and any amendments, together with identification for the individuals involved.
Can bullion bought by my SMSF be stored?
HLBullion can arrange storage with an independent third-party vault provider. Trustees remain responsible for ensuring the fund’s storage and record-keeping arrangements meet their obligations.
Can HLBullion help with SMSF tax or structuring questions?
HLBullion can connect clients with its partnered CPA and registered Tax Agent, who provides guidance independently. HLBullion itself does not provide taxation, financial or legal advice.
